The First Robot
How old is this technology? 20 years old? 50 years old?
Actually, this rendering is of a design from more than 500 years ago. Leonardo da Vinci designed the first known robot around 1495. It was an armored robot knight that could sit up, wave its arms, and move its head on a flexible neck. On the outside, the robot is dressed in a typical German-Italian suit of armor of the late fifteenth century.
The robot consisted of two independent systems: legs with three degrees of freedom - ankles, knees, and hips; and arms with four degrees of freedom - shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hands. A mechanical, analog-programmable controller within the chest provided power and control for the arms. The legs were powered by an external crank arrangement driving the cable, which was connected to key locations in the ankle, knee, and hip.
The original sketches were not found until the 1950's, and it is not known if the robot was ever built, but Da Vinci proved to be the world's first roboticist!

What would really be cool is if they found cartoon examples of this robot waving his arms and saying, "Danger Raphael! Danger!"
I can never make enough Renaissance masters jokes.
...and someday archaeologists will dig up one of those robot vacuum cleaners and write, "Amazingly, this was at one time considered a robot." Heck, maybe a robot will BE the archaeologist.

Yeah, Gmail is really convenient. I'm really liking what Google has going for them. I also recently converted to a personalized home page on google.com. Google doesn't have any friends, though. Haha. Microsoft, ISPs, etc. They just have a wide base of operations.
I was going through your posts, and saw that you're giving away the rest of your Writely invites. I would really like to have Writely because, as I said in my last post, I'm always using different computers-that's why I use Gmail. I have my own robot though...
The first known robot was not invented by Davinci. The first known robot was created around 400-350 BC by the mathematician Archytas and was a steam powered mechanical pigeon. You don't understand what a robot was or is. It doesn't have to be walking, talking, or even human in appearance. A robot is any device that can function autonomously, or operate by automatic control, and can if desired, perform complicated repetitive tasks in the place of a human.
